The Rest Stop
In the valley with no echoes
here we stand in stony silence,
well past the precipice of failure.
We are two lonely people who
for an instant, perhaps longer,
had felt full of happiness and life.
That fleeting time has passed back
to an era of emptiness and void.
The silence is not mutual although
neither of us can hear each other.
With so much love one fears that
this break in silence will lead to
daylight with dissolution of things past.
Here we stand petrified in stony silence
for fear that moving might cause that
now steady heart to come alive once more.
