Movies: Week of March 18th
I am getting back to watching movies. The movies seen this week were:
1. The Science of Sleep- 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' being among my favorite movies, it is really lame that I did not land up watching The Science of Sleep for such a long while.
Following the death of his father, a budding artist Stephane (Gael Garcia Bernal) comes back from Mexico to live with his mother in Paris. Stephane has difficulties in dissociating his dream world from the real world. His mother tempts him back with a job in a calender company, unfortunately the job is crappy job with no creative stimulation or requirement. While Stephane is settling into this life he meets his new neighbour Stephanie. The story of the movie is not so important as much as the creativity with which the movie is made. It certainly is not a masterpiece like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind, but it is a very enjoyable romantic comedy.
2. Scoop- I have watched a large number of movies by Woody Allen, mainly because his movies are entertaining and intelligent, maybe not in terms of the story. That said I was sorely disappointed with 'Matchpoint' which annoyed the heck out of me. 'Melinda and Melinda' is the kind of movie I like to watch. With 'Scoop' Woody redeemed himself. It is a murder mystery which has none of the seriousness of Match Point. Scarlett Johansson, Hugh Jackman and Woody Allen are the main characters in this movie. While I am sick of Scarlett Johansson's whiny non-variable acting, the role she was in as an American student in London was great. I do not find Woody Allen annoying, so I have no problems in him acting as a conjurer who helps in solving the mystery. The story is not deep, does not pretend to make a social commentary and is pretty funny in parts.
3. Mozart and the Whale- This was an excellent movie about 2 individuals with Aspergers who fall in love with each other. It is set in Spokane (got that from a friend of mine in Spokane) and is a pretty simple love story, the complexity is Aspergers Syndrome, which falls under the Autism Spectrum.
Radha Mitchell & Josh Hartnett are the main characters and do an excellent job. The movie is based on real life events. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who thinks they have a tough time being single.
